Treating Hangnails Properly To Prevent Infections
If dry scaly feet aren’t bad enough, we often have to also deal with hangnails. Hangnails can hurt and if not treated and manicured properly can lead to the possibility of infections.
What is a hangnail?
A hangnail is a piece of skin that separates from the side of the cuticle.
What Causes Hangnails?
There are several issues that can trigger hangnails. Iif cuticles are pushed back too aggressively this can cause the cuticle to get irritated and lead to hangnails. In addition, nails that are not routinely moisturized can begin to crack and break away-leading to hangnails.
How to Remove a hangnail?
First of all, it is very important that you do not rip them off. If they are ripped off, it can leave an open wound, which invites bacteria that can lead to an infection. Hangnails need to be removed very delicately:
- Clean your nails with an antibacterial soap.
- Trim the hangnail off from the base with a cuticle nail clipper.
- Add an anti-bacterial ointment and cover it with a band-aid for about 2-3 days.
How to prevent hangnails?
It is very important to keep your cuticles moisturized. Cuticle oil is a great moisturizer that’s also very nourishing for your cuticles and helps the overall health of your nails. It is recommended to moisturize at least once a day before bed. Some other options can include regular use of lotions as well as vitamin E for hydrating your skin and cuticles. Finally, your manicurist should never cut your cuticles. Remember, the cuticle protects the root of the nail from invasions of fungus and bacteria. Also, know that your nail tech should use sterilized tools and disposable nail files.
